Abstract

May 1998, the Indonesian people considered it a dark month, because in that month there was a riot tragedy caused by the monetary crisis which caused people to panic because the prices of basic necessities rose so high, this was because the rupiah exchange rate to the dollar rose. Economic disparities then made Indonesian ethnic Chinese citizens also become targets of hatred by a group of people. This study aims to understand and know the value of the family struggle on the film Di Balik 98. The research uses a semiotic analysis theory of Charles sanders peirce using three elements, which is sign, object, interpretant. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods and constructivism paradigms to uncover signs of the values of family struggle. The results reveal the values of the struggle of ethnic Chinese families, there are signs / meanings of never giving up, caring, trying, worrying, help to help, and sadness shown by the ethnic Chinese when they save themselves from being exposed to violent behavior such as beatings, harassment, rape, and sweeping to the destruction of houses, cars, and shops carried out by a group of masses which left many Chinese ethnic families traumatized and went abroad when the incident occurred. The conclusion of the film Behind 98 can illustrate the value of the struggle of ethnic Chinese families when they become objects of violence, hatred, until the destruction of shops and homes, by a group of masses.
